Wisdom

La Veirge a l'hostie Throughout the book of Proverbs, wisdom is personified as a woman offering treasures. She cries out in the streets and public squares, begging the foolish to seek her and gain understanding. "Do not forsake her, and she will keep you; love her, and she will guard you." (Proverb 4:6) There is common sense wisdom in this: if you follow the teachings of wise counsel, you will be protected from foolish error and are more likely to prosper in life.

But the imagery and assumptions in the biblical portrayal of wisdom are far more intense than sensible guidelines for living. Not forsaking wisdom means cleaving to her, as a man is to cleave to his wife. It implies a lifelong commitment and daily prioritization. Wisdom is not something to be played with and used; she is a companion to be loved.

This, of course, is the role of God in our lives, often portrayed by the Holy Spirit who dwells in us. It is good for us to see the Holy Spirit as person. It is good also to picture God in female imagery as well as male, for everything we value most in both male and female are reflections of God.

Whatever the imagery that works for you, the invitation is clear. You are invited to share all of life with the living God: all of your life devoted to her, all of his life poured into you. To accept this invitation is to embrace wisdom. May she dwell with you this day, and always.
