Why Read Scripture?

bible We often hear exhortation to read scripture. Why?

Certainly, the Peoples of the Book believe that the words of scripture provide revelation of God, knowledge we cannot gain from our own observations and reasoning. The Bible provides knowledge of God, and to know the one true God is eternal life. But could not that understanding come and then the Book be unecessary? Why continue reading?

"Indeed, the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing until it divides soul from spirit, joints from marrow; it is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart." (Hebrews 4:12)

Scripture provides a second kind of knowledge, just as spiritual as knowledge of God: an understanding of our own inner workings. Our human spirits and our own psychological processes are constantly moving us, often in competing directions. They need a guide as alive and active as they. The scriptures are that guide.

Almighty God, who spoke the world into being, move us to read your written word. And when we need revelation of our own hearts, make your word a sword and a judge for us, and give us courage to hear and obey.
