Jesus had made a series of jarring pronouncements: He is the
Messiah...he will suffer and be killed....he will rise again....his
followers must take up crosses, too, and lose their lives...some of his
disciples would see the kingdom of God come with power.
Then he leads
his three closest companions along the path high up a mountain, and they witness the
incredible transfiguration of Jesus into a light-filled presence,
accompanied by the heavenly figures of Moses and Elijah. (Mark 9:2-8)

Whew! Following Jesus is turning out to be a much bigger proposition
than it first appeared. The mystery and marvel of the man is
disturbing. His words are unsettling. Yet God's own voice says to
listen to him. And, this path he offers leads to
spiritual heights unknown before.
Peter and James and John stayed on the path. They learned, and failed,
and were forgiven, and followed, and lived and died for Jesus.
