Safe with God
Another tragedy in New York City today, as an airplane crashes into homes.
Probably accidental and not related to terrorism or sabotage, but nevertheless
another nail in the coffin of insecurity. So many of the things in which
we unthinkingly put faith - government protection, aviation safety,
mechanical excellence, structural stability, national security -
have proven themselves undependable. And it makes us fearful of
putting faith in anything.
It is disconcerting, but in reality, it places us where we always should
have been; dependent on God alone.
For only God is faithful
in all things, present at all times, powerful in all places, and mediator
between earthly and heavenly existence.
Go ahead, cease to put faith in human creations and human institutions.
But do not despair and do not fear. Instead, throw yourself upon the
mercy of our faithful God and know, deep in your soul, that whatever
happens - expected or shocking, next door or in your face, today or
tomorrow - you are safe in the hands of God.
Protect me, O God, for in you I take refuge.
I say to the LORD, 'You are my LORD;
I have no good apart from you.'
I keep the LORD always before me.
Because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.
Therefore my heart is glad, and my soul rejoices,
and my body also rests secure.
You show me the path of life.
In your presence there is fullness of joy;
in your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
(Psalm 16, 1-2, 8-9, 11)
