Openness
Jesus was on the way to Jerusalem, an indication of his political and religious beliefs. So the Samaritans would have nothing to do with him and his disciples. Jesus thought wrong; he must be wrong. What foolish reasoning. What a missed opportunity to receive healing and good news. They never even gave him a hearing. They did not know who it was they rejected. How often we judge someone or something as unworthy of attention because we label them by some code name: Republican or Democrat; liberal or fundamental; welcoming and affirming or condemning; and so on. But people are so much more than their current behavior or choices. Their ideas may even connect with our own at some point. Jesus' determination to go to Jerusalem was to replace the sacrificial system there with his own personal sacrifice and so open worship in spirit and in truth to all people, including the Samaritans. They had much to gain from him, but they missed it. Jesus' disciples wanted to call down fire and consume them, but Jesus rebuked them. He is not out to punish the foolish, but to make them wise. Do not interpret lack of punishment or correction in your particular way of thinking as a sign of divine approval. God's silence is not assent. Stay open to the unwelcome visitor and unexpected source of knowledge. They may be blessings in disguise. |
