Was That Meant for Me?
Iris
Iris Reflection

Was that meant for me? Sometimes people pose this question after a sermon, and likely more often, people suspect the same but don't pose the question. The answer is both no and yes. Was the sermon or eDevotion written specifically and exclusively for you? Were you singled out and toasted? No. Was it addressed to behaviors and attitudes that are evident in many people, among them you? Yes it was, and it was raised in the spirit of the gospel, in the tradition of Christ's church. If our spirit is right, sometimes sermons, eDevotions and other messages stop us in our tracks. We feel like deer frozen in headlights. If our spirit is still right we say "Thank you God, I needed this correction." Let us thank God for the many times that we are so corrected, for deep in our hearts we know that there are messages that we need to hear. There is an old expression about "being convicted by the gospel." The response is confession and repentance.

Make me responsive to the correction that you send me through others, Lord. Take away the defensiveness that asks "Was that meant for me?" and give me the spiritual grace to say "Thank you, that was meant for me." Amen
