The Gift of Peace
On two occasions a week apart, the resurrected Jesus appears to his
gathered disciples (John 20). Both times, his first words are, “Peace
be with you.” It is a greeting with much meaning.
It is a variation on the typical “Do not be afraid,” which are the words of assurance that angelic visitors speak to the shocked humans whom they confront. But Jesus’ words are more positive (proactive, not reactive). Not just an assurance, but a gift. The risen Jesus speaks peace, passes on peace, leaves peace with us even after his presence fades. The gift of peace--- for the emotions, calm for the mind, clarity for the spirit, union with God for the self-consciousness, centeredness, a peace with oneself and one’s purpose in life. A certainty that I and my future are in the powerful, wounded hands of Christ. The gift of peace. Surely it is well with my soul. |
