Blessed

palm leaf cross "Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord," is the cry of the people on Palm Sunday. Certainly it applies specifically and literally to Jesus, the one whom God sent to save us. Jesus is blessed, that is, honored or venerated, because he mediates blessedness, that is, pleasure, prosperity, or happiness.

But it also applies specifically and literally to any one of us when we go to another in the name of Jesus. When we offer to pray about their need. When we sit with them in their sorrow or pain. When we encourage them in their weakness. When we celebrate their joys. When we take a dinner or flowers to share our own good things. When we respond out of the love that Jesus revealed, we too both give pleasure and receive honor.

In the spirit of Palm Sunday, think of someone to whom you can go in the name of Jesus. Find a way to send them a blessing, and it will be returned to you. For "blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord."
